What is DNA testing?
DNA testing looks at the genes you have inherited from your parents. They are essentially your building blocks, or foundations for health, and play a role in determining your disease risk. The test will identify any variants (also called single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) that you have. However, they are only part of the picture!
Epigenetics is the science of understanding how your genes are expressed. Yes, genes can be switched on and off! Understanding how your diet, lifestyle and environment can affect your genes is a powerful tool that can help to shape your genetic destiny. When you know what your genes need, you can choose a diet and lifestyle that optimise your health.
It is important to remember that your genes are not your destiny. Having particular SNPs may indicate that certain functional aspects of your biochemistry may be effects or altered, and knowing this provides us with the opportunity to better tailor your treatment.
Who is DNA testing for?
Each of us is unique and our wellness can be directly affected by our individual, inherent differences as well as diet, lifestyle choices and the environment we live in. Instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach, DNA testing as part of personalised medicine allows your Naturopath to tailor your treatment plan to achieve more positive outcomes. DNA testing allows us to identify patients who are more likely to benefit from specific treatments, nutrient types or dosages, from those who are not.
If you are struggling with a chronic health issue, that hasn’t responded as well as you had hoped to treatment, then DNA testing is for you. It is also especially useful for couples that are seeking support with preconception, fertility and pregnancy care, or who have experienced unexplained miscarriage or pregnancy complications.
What is included in the test?
Depending on which ‘profile’ you select, the following may be included:
